Dr. Songrui Wang is a researcher at The Tianjin Institute of Power Sources, involved in battery testing and evaluation for design recommendations on safety. She analyzes the risk of potential fire hazards associated with lithium ion batteries, which are fast becoming the most popular sort of battery for vehicles, mobile devices, and many other applications.
COMSOL Multiphysics was used to create models that simulate the thermal behavior of lithium-ion cells under adiabatic conditions, coupling heat transfer to the electrochemical reactions. The models save both the institute’s and their partners’ money by replacing the costs of running hundreds of dangerous and tedious experiments, and also saved time in the analysis of designs. Dr. Wang’s analyses allow her to optimize cell geometry and study the thermal behavior of materials, allowing her to understand the cells’ safety aspects and to promote awareness.
