Microcontact printing is a method for depositing patterns of thin films or molecular monolayers on surfaces using a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) stamp for selective mechanical contact (Figure 1). Undesired deformation of the stamp features during printing affects printed pattern quality. Hence, stamps need to be well-designed to prevent erroneous prints. Existing investigations identify the ...

COMSOL Multiphysics®

Studies of Sound Radiation from Beams with Acoustic Black Holes

C. Zhao [1], M. G. Prasad [1],
[1] Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, NJ, USA

Recently, acoustic black holes (ABH), a new passive structural modification approach to control vibration and noise from mechanical structures have been developed and studied. This preliminary study presents the work on the influence of acoustical black holes on the vibration and sound field of beams. The simulation and experimental results show that the parameters m and a in the power law ...

Evaluation of the Shutdown Time of Subsea Pipeline for Oil Transportation - new

D. Maciel[1], N. Bouchonneau[1]
[1]Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil

The maintenance plan or rush-to-repair of a subsea pipeline for oil transport may result in the shutdown of the line, in other words, may stop the flow of fluid. During the shutdown, the temperature of the oil tends to decrease continuously, and the heavy molecules tend to crystallize and suspend in the oil, which increase the viscosity of the oil, and even form a paraffinic compound or freeze ...

Photo-Biological Reactor for Organic Waste Consumption and Hydrogen Production - new

L. F. de Souza[1]
[1]Universidade Federal do Paraná, Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil

A simple steady-state photo-fermentative biochemical model was developed using the COMSOL Multiphysics'® Transport of Diluted Species physics interface. A dimensionless model seeks optimal physical parameters based on given biochemical parameters found in literature. A parametric sweep of the physical parameters is enabled without altering the mesh. Other limitations can be easily added to this ...

Thermal Study of Valve Regulated Lead Acid Batteries and Electronics Chamber Used in Stand-Alone Street Lighting Applications - new

D. Groulx[1], J. Skaalum[1], T. Jamieson[1]
[1]Mechanical Engineering, Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS, Canada

This paper presents a study on the heat generation of Valve-Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) batteries used in off-grid streetlighting applications from PoleCo, a Halifax based company. One goal of the project was to produce validated COMSOL® models of the enclosure that holds these VRLA batteries. This model can then be used to investigate methods of reducing the temperature of the batteries based on ...

Snap Buckling of a Constrained Photomechanical Switch Driven by Elastic Instability

M. L. Smith [1], A. A. Sicard [1], A. A. Skandani [2], M. R. Shankar [2],
[1] Hope College, Holland, MI, USA
[2] University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA, USA

Photomechanical materials experience strains in response to light of certain wavelengths. These remotely triggered, photo-induced strains lead to large-scale deformations, presenting significant opportunities for wireless actuators and light-driven morphing structures. A large space of possible mechanical behaviors exist for these materials since their response depends on a variety of system ...

Multiphysics CAE Simulations of Casting Process for First-time-right Product Development

M. Hussain [1], Ramanathan S. [1], R. C. Thiagarajan [1],
[1] ATOA Scientific Technologies, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India

Casting product performance depends on material, flow, Process Temperature, Solidification, Shrinkage and residual stress. In a casting process, not all available resources are utilized effectively which results in low quality of casting, defects and metal wastage. Physics based modeling is increasingly used to optimize product performance, improve quality and reduce defects of casting products. ...

Level-Set based Topology Optimisation of Convectively Cooled Heatsinks

M. S. Santhanakrishnan [1], T. Tilford [1], C. Bailey [1],
[1] The University of Greenwich, London, United Kingdom

Introduction Thermal management is a key challenge in development of modern microelectronics systems. This is becoming an increasingly critical area of microelectronics packaging design due to the ever increasing levels of miniaturisation, integration and operating frequency which result in significantly higher power densities. This study looks to address this challenge through advanced ...

Modeling of the Reduction Stage during the Continuous Refining of Copper in a Packed Bed Reactor

F. Mansilla[1], L. Voisin [2]
[1]Advanced Mining Technology Center, Chile University, Santiago, Chile
[2]Department of Mining Engineering, Advanced Mining Technology Center, Chile University, Santiago, Chile

Throughout history, the copper pyrometallurgical processes have been carried out mostly in discontinuous or batch systems. In recent decades new continuous technologies have been developed but focused only on Smelting and Converting stages leaving aside the Refining one. In 2002 a novel technology was proposed by the Department of Mining Engineering of Chile University which consists in two ...
