Multilayered Porous Material: Poroelastic Waves with Thermal and Viscous Losses (Biot-Allard Model)

In applications where pressure and elastic waves propagate in porous materials filled with air, both thermal and viscous losses are important. This is typically the case in insulation materials for rooms, lining materials in car cabins, or foams used in headsets and speakers. Another example is porous material in mufflers in the automotive industry. In many cases, these materials can be modeled ...

Small Concert Hall Acoustics

Designing structures and open spaces with respect to sound quality is important for concert halls, outdoor environments, and even the rooms of a house. Simulating acoustics in the high-frequency limit, where the wavelength is smaller than the geometrical features, can be done with ray acoustics. There are several advantages to modeling ray acoustics, including changing media properties and ...

Radially Polarized Piezoelectric Transducer

This tutorial model shows how a user-defined coordinate system can be used to create any type of directional polarization of a piezoelectric material. Results are shown for the case of radial polarization of a piezoelectric disk. The piezoelectric material is PZT-5H. The example shows a static analysis. Visualization of the cylindrical coordinate system as well as the stress/strain in that ...

Acoustic Muffler with Thermoviscous Acoustic Impedance Lumping

This model utilizes the thermoviscous acoustic interface in a sub-model to obtain detailed results for the transfer impedance of a perforated plate (including the thermal and viscous losses). The impedance is in turn used as an internal impedance in a pressure acoustic model of a muffler. The results are compared to classic impedance models and measurements.

Gaussian Pulse Absorption by Perfectly Matched Layers: Pressure Acoustics, Transient

This tutorial simulates a standard test and benchmark model for perfectly matched layers (PMLs) as absorbing boundary conditions in the time domain. It involves the propagation of a transient Gaussian pulse with no flow. The _Pressure Acoustics, Transient_ interface is used together with PMLs to reduce the computational domain and suppress the reflections from the artificial boundaries. An ...

Axisymmetric Condenser Microphone

This is a model of a condenser microphone with a simple axisymmetric geometry. The model aims to give a precise description of the physical working principles of such a microphone. The condenser microphone is considered to be the microphone with highest quality when performing precise acoustical measurements and with high-fidelity reproduction properties when performing sound recordings. This ...

Generic 711 Coupler—An Occluded Ear-Canal Simulator

This is the model of an occluded ear canal simulator (a generic 711 coupler). Besides certain details the geometry corresponds to the Brüel & Kjær Ear Simulator Type 4157. The real life couplers are used for simulating the acoustics of a standardized human ear canal and can be used for measurements on all sorts of devices. They are widely used in the hearing aid industry but also as ear ...

Acoustic Reflections off a Water-Sediment Interface

This model determines the reflection coefficient of plane acoustic waves, at different frequencies and at different angles of incidence, off a water-sediment interface. The ability of the Poroelasitc Waves interface to model the coupled acoustic and elastic wave in any porous substance (Biot's theory) is used to describe the water-sediment system. The model results are in good agreement with ...

Organ Pipe Design

The Organ Pipe Designer allows you to study the design of an organ pipe and then play the sound and pitch of the changed design in a user-friendly app. The pipe sound includes the effects of different harmonics with different amplitudes. The organ pipe is modeled using the Pipe Acoustics, Frequency Domain interface in COMSOL Multiphysics. The simulation app allows you to analyze how the first ...

Flow Duct

The modeling of aircraft-engine noise is a central problem in the field of computational aeroacoustics. The acoustic field in a model of an axially symmetric aero-engine duct, generated by a noise source at the boundary, is computed and visualized. Results are presented for situations with as well as without a compressible irrotational background flow and for the cases of hard and lined duct ...
